Club History

Hartford Golf Club has a long and distinguished history.  It was first founded in 1928.  The original 9 holes along with a farm house that served as a clubhouse was available to the people of Hartford.  In 1932 the club was actually disbanded, and then reformed again in 1933.  At that time 150 shares of stock were sold for $75.00 each.  A little later the first golf pro was hired, Lee Hawkins.  A few years later in 1947, Roundy Wenzel was brought in to run the club.  He served well for the next 30 years.  In the late 50’s it was decided that a new clubhouse was needed, and built.

hole 1In 1966 it was decided to build an additional 9 holes.  This was a project that was embraced by the entire membership.  Roundy Wenzel and Dennis Carroll helped to spearhead the project.  Killian and Nugent were brought in to be the architects. Thousands of man hours were donated by groups of members and their children to help pick up rocks, lay thousands of feet of wire, water pipe, and build a maintenance shed.  This project speaks volumes about the depth of feeling that Hartford Golf Club members have for their club.  Shortly after this project, Earl DuPont was hired to run the clubhouse.  He then went on to become the third golf pro in Hartford Golf Club history.  Dewey went on to serve for over 30 years.  During his time there were several major issues that affected the club.  In 1983 the club was reorganized.

In yet another case of Hartford Golf Club members thinking of their club first, they actually donated their shares of stock to ensure that Hartford Golf Club would survive in its current form.  Eschewing the opportunity to cash in on their stock, they actually formed an organization that is dedicated to providing affordable golf in the Hartford area.  Another major development occurred in the serious drought year of 1988.  At this time it was decided to bring a fairway watering system in.  This has led to the outstanding conditions that we still enjoy today.

The quality of the golf course can be judged by the numerous outstanding events that have been hosted here.  They include:  Wisconsin State Golf Association (WSGA) Events (The Governor’s Cup, State Net Partners, State Best Ball Championship, as well as numerous State Amateur Qualifiers), and Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association (WWSGA) Events (Mother/Son, Mother/Daughter, and Best Ball Championship).   As is obvious, Hartford Golf Club has a rich history filled with outstanding achievements.
